Statistically, the general public traditionally purchases the most new pets during the period between Thanksgiving and New Years each year.  The Home for the Holidays Campaign intiative encourages the general public to obtain their next pet from a shelter, rather than a pet store:

For the fourth consecutive year, Indiana HRS is participating in the Indiana Home for the Holidays Campaign.  For people interested in obtaining a pet, please help us spread the word to give the gift of life to a homeless dog, cat, rabbit, guinea pig, hamster this holiday season.

The Pet Jamboree All Breed Rescue based in Fort Wayne, IN is launching an alliance to save the pets of the hurricane. We only have the power to  make a dent in the number of animals who are left homeless after this catastrophe.

The Pet Jamboree will leave Tuesday, September 6th along with another rescue group out of Muncie, IN to head for and Alabama shelter to save as many lives as possible. This transport should bring back around 75 animals.  We will then vaccinate, spay/neuter, and find forever homes for all of the animals. We will pull more animals if we gain the support of local businesses for housing and care of these animals.

If the project is successful, there will be multiple trips to the hurricane area to save more pets. Your help is needed.

We need donations in the following forms:
• Gas Cards
• Towels
• Dog Food

We are also asking for local veterinarians to donate rabies vaccinations and spay and neuter surgeries for these animals.

Donations should be dropped off at The Pet Playground and Resort, located at 9423 Lima Rd between 10am and 7pm.

For more information or if your business would like to help, please call (260)486-3555 or go to www.petjamboree.com

To adopt one of these animals, please fill out our online application at www.petjamboree.com

If your rescue group is able to take some of these animals, please call Christi at (260)486-3555 for more information on how to help.

We have been busy as usual, trying to educate post-Easter impulse purchasers. Three events in late April: NSAL Tour for Life, Earth Day, and Ed Event in conjunction with shelter fundraiser (HSI Mutt Strutt). Three events in May, with dual events on May 1st – 500 Kids Festival (~50,000 people) and an Adoption Day. On May 2nd, a Pet Fest Adoptathon at the Fair Grounds and also our Rabbit Expo on Saturday, May 8th.

With December’s “Home for the Holidays” (H4TH) adoption event, we provided complimentary Local and National HRS memberships for Humane Society of Indianapolis Rabbit Adopters. Our driver was to provide support, reducing re-surrenders.

After the H4TH promotion ended, we made the decision to extend the complementary local membership to HSI rabbit adopters – YTD we have issued 26. We recently committed to expand this program statewide and are working out the logistics to implement. As you know, support is critical for rabbits adopted from shelters where rabbits are not altered prior to placement.

Indiana HRS also trained HSI customer service, vet techs, and kennel staff on rabbit care/behavior/adoptions. We are currently working with the shelter to rewrite all of their staff training for intake profiles, behavior evaluation, rabbit care, and adoption policies at the shelter. The feedback has been very positive.

We have approached HSI about serving as a “peer trainer” for other shelters. We’ve been working with HSI for 4 years at this point, they have excellent shelter model. We are currently developing resources for shelters state-wide, in an effort to help them build high-quality rabbit adoption programs.
